The route driver delivers dozens of beverage cases in the course of the day. Delivery trucks are generally tall, with deep and high cargo bays.  The bays are often seven feet high, 40 inches wide and 40 inches deep. Drivers use repeated, extended and elevated reaches first to open and close the large and heavy bay doors and then to access and lift product out of the truck bays, and then bend over to play the load onto a handtruck below. Weight is constantly changing and in different locations i.e. overhead, below hips, and often with impedances to reach past (loaded on the truck).

Work demand often creates body mechanics that strain not strengthen the body and invariably results in injury, if not from a single incident, then over sustained periods of time. 50% of the wrong motion translates to thousands of pounds on the wrong body joints. 95% of freight beverage route drivers state they have back related pain, over 60% state that they have shoulder related pain. Shoulder and back injury losses are difficult if at all possible to recover from.

Standardized body positioning which relies on e.g. bend the knees, keep the back flat, bring the weight close in, will not functionally apply in many reaches where the weight is away from the body. Example: overhead reaches accounting for 1.5 tons of the 4 - 7 tons of weight moved daily by beverage delivery drivers.
